The 24-year-old, two-way Los Angeles star is dealing with a sprained ligament in his throwing elbow and has not pitched since June 6. Los Angeles has not put a timetable on his return to the mound.
Scioscia said Monday that Ohtani has been playing catch regularly in the outfield without suffering a setback. He’s currently throwing from 120 feet, according to the Associated Press.
“(Ohtani) is probably closer to getting on the mound than we thought last week,” Scioscia said Monday.
Ohtani has appeared regularly in the Angels lineup. He entered play Tuesday slashing .268/.346/.521 with 11 home runs and 29 RBIs.
Ohtani registered his first multi-home run game last week against the Indians.
