RALEIGH, NC (WKBN/WCMH) — A mother from North Carolina was shocked to see what happened to her 7-year-old daughter’s avatar on a popular iPad game. Now she’s warning other parents to be more aware and careful.
Amber Petersen was reading a book to her daughter, who was listening while playing Roblox, a game recommended for kids ages 7 and up.
On its website, Roblox describes itself as “the best place to imagine with friends.” It says it’s “the number one gaming site for kids and teens,” allowing users to “create adventures, play games, role play and learn with their friends in a family-friendly, immersive, 3D environment.”
Her daughter interrupted the story to show Petersen the images on her iPad screen.
Petersen said her daughter’s avatar character was being violently gang-raped by two other players on a virtual playground. She said another player jumped on her daughter’s avatar and then all three walked away as her daughter’s character lay facedown on the ground.
Petersen said she was able to block her daughter’s view of most of it.
In her Facebook post detailing the event, Petersen said she is “questioning whether or not I should allow my precious 7-year-old daughter to have access to a screen ever again.”
She said she had all of the game’s security settings in place to protect her child.
Petersen has since deleted the app.
Roblox issued a statement to the Daily Mail about the incident.
We have identified how this bad actor created the offending action and are putting additional safeguards in place to reduce the possibility of this happening again in the future…We have zero tolerance for this behavior. Our work to ensure a safe platform is always evolving and remains a top priority for us.”
