There have been a number of rumors indicating that Mileena won’t be returning as a playable character in Mortal Kombat 11. Notably, she was one of the characters that met a very gruesome end during the events of Mortal Kombat X’s main story mode.
With Kitana’s reveal and breakdown, these rumors appear to have been substantiated somewhat. For some reason, Kitana is capable of arming herself with some of Mileena’s special moves with the right custom variation choices.
Recall for a moment when it was first announced that Jade would not be playable in Mortal Kombat X. It was revealed that Kitana would be able to use Jade’s staff and glaive attacks during her “Mournful” variation.
History appears to be repeating itself. One of the variation choices gives Kitana access to “Half-Blood Stance.” While in this state, Kitana is shown to be holding Mileena’s iconic and unmistakable sai as it emits a purplish aura.
This stance allows Kitana to perform one of several of Mileena’s special moves — with Kitana’s own take on them, of course. One option allows her to initiate the teleport drop kick. The amplified version has Kitana throwing a fan while airborne after striking.
Kitana can also be commanded to throw the sai at the opponent. Rather than throwing it straight forward like Mileena, she throws it upwards instead. This attack appears to track the opponent’s current location after a brief delay.
Another option allows Kitana to perform a melee stab with the sai. After hitting with three thrown sai, this will cause massive damage thanks to the Crushing Blow.
So this raises a big question. Why would the developers give Kitana Mileena’s moves if Mileena was in the game? More than likely, they didn’t.
There is a strong possibility that Mileena won’t be playable within the game’s launch roster. We couldn’t help but notice that there are only two empty slots on Mortal Kombat 11’s character select screen remaining.
However, considering that Shang Tsung was announced as Mortal Kombat 11’s first DLC character, all hope may not be lost. For the sake of the Mileena fans, here’s hoping she returns as a DLC character — assuming she doesn’t occupy one of the two remaining base roster slots.
